Attendance

Punctuality and regular attendance by all students is encouraged for these reasons:

  1. Regular consistent attendance promotes good learning and helps students achieve their full potential.

  2. Good work and attendance habits cultivated in school will help students prepare for higher education and careers.

  3. Attendance records are important to college admissions counselors and prospective employers. They invariably inquire about a student's attendance record as they consider admission or employment. To efficiently run the school and because the faculty and administration care about your son or daughter, it is important for you to notify the school if he/she will be absent or late. The attendance policy and procedures for student absences are listed in full in the Student Handbook

Parent Requested Absences

Occasionally parents may decide that certain experiences or family needs may warrant students' absences from class. Our policy was made to be a family-oriented policy and its intent is to allow families to spend time together if desired. This is not a student personal day policy; we do not have such a policy.

The school year has only 180 days in which to educate, we strongly discourage parents from taking their students out of class. Please attempt to use regular school vacation times first.

Parent Requested Absences (PRA) are limited to a maximum of three days per school year. For any additional days taken following these three, policy is that only major tests may be taken' assignments, quizzes and labs will be given a 0. Any request for additional PRA absences because of very special extenuating circumstances should be made in writing at least a month in advance to allow the Education Committee to rule on them.

The following procedures apply to PRA's:

  1. All parent requests must be made to the office using the Parent Requested Absence Form at least two school days before the absence and must be authorized by the assistant principal. The school reserves the right to withhold permission for the excused based on the student's prior attendance record.
  2. Students must be accompanied by their parent(s) or parent-appointed adult guardian (over 21).
  3. Students must make up any tests or work missed during their single-day absences either before they leave or on the day of the return and within two days if the absence is longer than one day.
  4. Teachers will limit their extra help to students to providing quizzes or tests the student didn't receive during the absence. Teachers' signatures are required on the form.
  5. These days are not applicable during the last five days of each semester.

Discipline Procedures

SCHS students and parents expect a learning environment that reflects a basic Christian lifestyle. Faculty, staff, the board, and students themselves create and encourage such an environment. Students need to know how their behavior affects those around them.

SCHS staff and board intend and pray that any disciplinary action which results from inappropriate behavior will help students better contribute to a Christian learning and growing environment. To help track behavior that detracts from that learning environment, a point system was established. A summary of the point policy system is included in the Student Handbook.
