The Adolescent Party Scenes

"Supervised" parties in private homes - Some parties are closely supervised by parents; however, at many parties thought to be supervised, parents are at home but not sufficiently attentive. Beer, wine, cocktails, or alcoholic punch are sometimes offered by parents, especially before or after dances or special events. Some young people will bring their own alcohol or other drugs and may consume them outside the house, in the car, or in the yard.

Unsupervised parties in private homes - Unsupervised parties may take place in the home of a teen whose parents are out for the evening or out of town. Frequently a youngster becomes an involuntary host to a larger gathering than the few friends invited. The party may be open; anyone is invited. Guests bring their own alcohol. Kegs of beer may be purchased by older friends, siblings or adults. Field parties are regularly held, unsupervised by parents or other consenting adults.

Other information you should know - Hotel rooms are rented for all-night partying, especially before or after dances and special events. Students party at Lake Michigan beaches and at beach cottages. Cottages may be used without parents' knowledge or permission. Many students feel that, in order to enjoy attending football games, rock concerts, dances, etc., they must party beforehand. Because "everyone else" is going, many of our teens attend parties where alcohol and other drugs may be present. It is not unusual for a teen to carry the same can of warm beer around all evening, drinking little or none of it. Many youngsters "act drunk" when, in reality, they are very sober. It is very easy for teenagers to obtain alcoholic beverages. Some of the more common sources are family liquor cabinet and refrigerator, older siblings and friends, stores that fail to check identification carefully.
