Extra-Curricular Activities
There are a number of extracurricular opportunities available at South
for those who want to be involved. Participation is encouraged since working
with other students and the faculty on projects other than class work
is an important part of each student's life.
ATHLETICS -
The athletic program at South Christian provides excellent educational
experiences to help achieve the mission of the school.
As a gift from our Heavenly Father, athletics are a form of play
meant to be enjoyed by His children.
In addition to being fun and encouraging many positive relationships,
athletics can help develop Christ-like character in our students such as
teamwork, discipline, passion, self-control, and more.
Many teams do not have try-outs, so there are many opportunities to
participate each season for both boys and girls.
In 2009-2010 about 64% of our students participated at least one
season on an athletic team.
BCTV - Local cable channel 25 or Digital Comcast channel 917 - is a student-operated station through Byron
Center Public High School that allows the students to grow in their understanding
of what it takes to produce a quality program. This station airs community
activities from the Byron Township area.
CLASS OFFICER - Each class elects a president, vice president, secretary,
and treasurer. Those wishing to run for office must submit a nominating
petition with a required number of signatures. Present ninth, tenth and
eleventh graders elect officers for the following year in the spring. Incoming
ninth graders hold elections within one month of school's opening.
CONNECTIONS -
This group's purpose is
to reach across
grades, groups, special needs, and cultures, striving to see others through
God’s eyes.
South Christian students help out by being a
peer tutor, a lunch partner, planning Special Events, or just by being a
friend. Why participate?
To experience
the joy of helping/serving others, to reach across boundaries, and to
discover God-given gifts.
What's needed? Some time,
concern for others, and willingness to reach out.
DRAMATIC ARTST -
Throughout the year, there are three productions that are
developed: a play in the fall, a musical in the spring, and Student Directed
Plays in May. Tryouts are open
and encouraged to all students for the play and the musical.
While everyone may audition for the Student Directed Plays, only
seniors may direct. There are
many other opportunities to become involved with the dramatic productions
that do not require acting, such as: hair and make-up design and
application, lighting and sound technicians, set construction, orchestra,
and ticket sales.
DRAMA & SPEECH -
This class is designed to coincide with the Forensics
Competition with area schools who are a part of the Michigan Interscholastic
Forensics Association (MIFA), and provides students with the opportunity to
select, develop, and perform a speech or dramatic piece in a competition
against several participating schools.
All students enrolled in the class are required to participate in the
competition, while special consideration will be provided for students who
wish to be a part of the team and not take the class.
HOMECOMING COMMITTEE - This committee is voluntary and plans all activities
including class competition, decorations, and homecoming night activities.
Meetings begin in the fall during noon hour and continue as necessary during
noon hour and after school until homecoming.
INTRAMURALS - An extra curricular opportunity open to all students. Volleyball
and badminton tournaments are played during lunch hour throughout the year.
Students sign up to participate prior to each tournament.
JAZZ BAND - The Jazz Band is a select group of instrumentalists from grades
10-12. This group will study contemporary and standard jazz music along
with other popular styles. The emphasis will be on learning and incorporating
swing "style" into a smaller ensemble. They will perform at concerts
and at jazz festivals around the state. The student must audition or be
placed in the ensemble by the band director. The student must also be a
member of one of the concert bands to be eligible for jazz band.
JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM - Along with teacher sponsors, volunteers from the
Junior Class form several committees to plan the Jr. Sr. prom which is held
in the Spring.
LIBRARY AIDE - Students are needed each semester to help the librarian with
various tasks. These include processing new books, checking books and magazines
out and in, and shelving books and magazines. Those interested should be
willing to help others and enjoy reading. Library aides are accepted by
the librarian.
MADRIGALS - This is an audition-only ensemble for which all SCHS students
grades 9-12 are eligible to audition. The Madrigals meet at least once per
week (generally Monday evenings 7-9 p.m.) and tour every other year with the Concert Choir. All expenses for tours are the responsibility
of each member. Only students who can demonstrate outstanding choral aptitude,
tone, technique and sight-reading potential should audition. Musical styles
ranging from Madrigals to Vocal Jazz are studied in order to give approximately
8-12 performances per year. Participation in one of the other sCHS choirs
is mandatory. Participation in school chapels, assemblies
and musicals is expected but not mandatory for all members. Attendance at
all rehearsals, district/state choral festivals, school, church and community
events is required for or the student will lose his/her place in the ensemble.
No credit towards graduation is given for participation in this group; however
college recommendations and references for admission will be given for each
member by the director.
MATH CLUB - This is open to all students. South Christian students
participate in 2 on campus competitions, one of which is a
series of 6 test dates
PEP BAND - Students who play in the symphonic band or concert band are selected
on a need and seniority basis for the pep band which performs at home basketball
games.
SKI CLUB - Students may join for a fee to ski at Bittersweet Ski area. Watch
noon announcements in late fall for information.
STAGE SHOW - This program sponsored by the Student Council usually takes
place the first Saturday evening in December. Acts must be presented to
and approved of by Mr. Miedema and committee. Proceeds are used for the
Christmas Drive.
STUDENT COUNCIL - This group of elected students sponsors a variety of activities
for the student body, organizes the Christmas drive, and works as a governing
body to develop school policy or to change existing policy by working through
the board and faculty. Three students from each class and the class president
serve as representatives. Students wishing to serve on the student council
must submit nominating petitions with a required number of signatures for
elections in the spring from the present ninth, tenth and eleventh grades.
Incoming ninth graders will elect representatives within one month of the
school's beginning in the fall.
YOUNG LIFE - This organization is a Christian ministry whose purpose is
to communicate the gospel message to young people. A weekly Monday night
club meeting is held in the portable at South Christian and a Campaigners meeting
is held on Friday mornings for Bible study. Spring and summer camps are
also an available part of this Christ committed ministry.
