Professional Biography |
After graduating from Calvin College, I taught at Terra Ceia Christian School in eastern North Carolina for three years, and then spent a year finishing my Master’s degree and teaching a few freshmen English classes at Eastern North Carolina University. I then moved back to Hudsonville, Michigan, where I had grown up, and eventually began teaching at Byron Center Christian School. I came to South Christian with the first ninth-graders in 1992 and have been at South since. I think I enjoy my work a little more each year, and I believe it’s a rare blessing to have a job interacting with people I like so much.
Personal Biography |
I met my wife Nancy in North Carolina and we’ve been blessed with five children and a wealth of extended family. They’re our social lives and main hobbies, I guess, but I also enjoy reading, keeping up my yard and, usually less productively, tinkering with small engines and electronics. We’re also fairly busy in our church which has really enriched our lives.
Faith |
Though I certainly could be better at it, I feel it’s a great privilege to be able to live out my faith in Christ in my job here at South. I’m sure He is the only hope for our students and their futures. This is often emphasized to me when we interact with other schools and I see their efforts to shape kids lives with a sort of “civic” religion—in the end it reminds me of the old “spinning wheels” analogy. I’m very thankful we work on a solid foundation.
