Biography

I graduated from Calvin College with a major in Mathematics and a minor in Religion. After graduating from Calvin, I taught for five years in St. Louis, Missouri where I earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Maryville University. I have been teaching math courses and coaching basketball since moving back to Grand Rapids in 1999. I have been married to my wife Laura since 1995. Together we have three children – Jake, Sam, and Josie. We love hanging out together and being active/exercising, water-skiing, playing/watching sports. We also enjoy lots of reading.

Faith Statement

I believe God gives us purpose for our lives. I enjoy teaching and coaching at South Christian because it provides a context to build relationships with young people with whom I can share my love for Jesus Christ. Whether it is through mathematics or basketball, I hope students see how my relationship with Christ influences my life. My goal and my prayer is that my students would mature more and more as Christian young people moving toward a disciplined and passionate Christian life.

I believe that my life is most complete when I realize I need Jesus Christ as my Savior and my Lord. This relationship with Him shapes my life and gives it deep meaning and purpose. He is a sovereign yet personal God who loves and accepts me perfectly. It is so enjoyable, as a parent myself, to see my own kids grow in many ways, work together, and enjoy the gifts God gave them. I think our Father in Heaven has a similar view of our lives as we grow more like Jesus, work in communities, and enjoy His gifts to us.
