I’ve lived all over the U.S. thanks to my dad’s military career, but I spent most of my growing-up years in California and Washington State. I went to a Christian school from early on and continued that path into college at Dordt University, where I earned my Bachelors in Social Work in 2014 and later returned and completed my Masters in 2024.

Over the years, I’ve had the chance to work in a variety of social work roles—from case management and mentorship programs to medical social work and university counseling. I’ve loved the variety, and each experience has helped shape the way I support students today. Being a counselor is something I genuinely enjoy—I love walking alongside students and helping them navigate life. I’m married to Brady, and we have three amazing daughters—Teigen, Taytum, and Tenlee—who keep life busy, loud, and full of joy. In my free time, you’ll usually find me outside, walking with my kiddos and our dog, or playing in the garden with a coffee in hand (because coffee makes everything better).

I graduated from Calvin University with a degree in secondary education integrated science and a minor in biology. While at Calvin, I did my semester of student teaching at South Christian in the fall of 2024, teaching physical science and chemistry.

When I’m not at school, I love hanging out with my friends and being outside in nature. I also love to travel! I have recently discovered the joy of sudoku and crossword puzzles. I am a huge nerd when it comes to Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, 70s/80s rock music and of course, science. When it comes to caffeine, I just love an iced dirty chai latte or an iced caramel latte. I love being out in nature and seeing science first hand, and I can’t wait to show that to my students!

Beginning with my first Spanish class as a freshman in high school, I developed a love for languages. Although I had always wanted to be a teacher, my Spanish classes in high school encouraged my choice to become a high school Spanish teacher. I majored in Spanish and minored in Math at Calvin College, focusing on Secondary Education. I spent time in both Spain and Honduras in college and returned to Honduras to teach at an international school for five years after college, further developing my love, not only for the Spanish language, but for Spanish-speaking people and their cultures. After Honduras, I taught in Brazil for a year and then returned with my family to the United States. From 2019-2025, I taught K-8 Spanish at Allendale Christian School. I am excited to be back in a high school classroom, exploring the Spanish language and culture with high school students. My husband, Tony, and I live in Grandville with our three children, Kylynn, Hudson, and Viviana. In addition to speaking and teaching Spanish, I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, camping, running, playing and watching sports, reading, and cooking.

I attended Western Michigan University and Davenport University where I studied education and played lacrosse. I am currently finishing my degree at Grand Rapids Community College. Previously I attended Forest Hills Central High School. I was a part of many extracurricular activities, but one of my favorites was playing on our Special Olympics Unified Basketball team. I recently took the role as one of the assistant coaches of our NEW lacrosse team here at South–Go Sailors! My free time mostly consists of spending time with my three little sisters, Bella, Sophia, and Gracie, or hanging out with my friends.

I grew up right around West Michigan and graduated from South Christian in 2018. From there I went on to Calvin University where I graduated in 2022. As I started my freshman year of college, I was unaware of where the Lord wanted to take me in my career path, but I did know I loved sports and the community that comes along with them. In the summers, I was working at a Summer Camp that solidified that teaching was where the Lord wanted me and what I was passionate about. I have received my Bachelors in Physical Education and Health, and I am so excited that I get to share these passions with students at South Christian this upcoming year. South is where I grew in my faith through sports teams, Young Life, chapels and youth group. In my free time I love spending time with family and friends, being active, and playing sports!

I grew up in Costa Rica where my parents were missionaries with Christian Reformed World Missions (now Resonate). When I was eight years old, we moved back to the U.S. I graduated from East Martin Christian High School and was a stay-at-home mom for 12 years. When my youngest was in Kindergarten, I began working at Cross Creek Charter Academy where I was an Intervention Parapro. This fall, I’ll be receiving an Associate’s degree from GRCC. I’m excited that God has led me to SCHS!

I have been married to my husband Steve for 11 years. We have a blended family with five kids. We are active members of Princeton CRC. We also enjoy traveling – especially to national parks, camping, fishing and hockey. My husband and I love to stay active. We recently completed our first Triathlon. Last year, I completed my first marathon. I also enjoy gardening, arts and crafts.

I graduated from Calvin University with a major in English Secondary Education and a minor in ESL. I completed my student teaching experiences at East Grand Rapids Middle School and Rockford Freshman Center, where I enjoyed engaging with students and collaborating with fellow educators. Attending international schools before college allowed me to develop a deep appreciation of cultural diversity, so I love traveling around and learning about different cultures and traditions.

I am originally from the Adirondack Mountains of New York State, but moved to Michigan to attend Calvin College and I’ve been here (mostly) ever since. I received a Bachelors in Music Education from Calvin in 2001. I spent two years teaching choir and music in Port-au-Prince, Haiti and then came back to the States and spent 16 years teaching choir at Hudsonville Christian Middle School. I am a pianist and play professionally in the area. I also enjoy participating in church music through singing and leading a children’s choir at my home church, LaGrave Avenue Christian Reformed Church. My husband and two children and I enjoy heading back to the Adirondack Mountains each summer and relaxing at our favorite beaches.

I was born and raised in Kentwood, MI and attended South Christian High School. From there I attended Grand Rapids Community College where I earned a degree in Interior Design. My husband Andrew also attended South Christian and we have three children, Lila, Roslyn and Miles. We spend our time walking our dog Baxter, hiking, camping and fishing. We also love spending time with our friends and attending football games on Friday nights.

We have been blessed to be raised in the South Christian Community and are excited to be raising our children in it as well. I am excited to be heading back to my alma mater and can’t wait to see what the future holds.

Anna Alkema

I graduated from Indiana Wesleyan University in 2024 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Math Education. This past year has been full of exciting changes—I moved from Ohio to Michigan, got married to my wonderful husband, Jack, and had the opportunity to teach at both South Christian in the fall and Calvin Christian in the spring. I am so excited to now have a classroom of my own and fully embrace this fantastic community at South Christian. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy reading, music, and theater, as well as hiking, traveling, and spending time outdoors. My husband is the youth pastor at Center Church, and I love being involved in the youth group alongside him. I feel incredibly grateful to be teaching in a place where faith and education come together, and I look forward to building relationships with students and staff in the year ahead.
